Starting a lash business in Kenya: the supplies you need

Lash work is close to the eye, so it pays to start with the right tools and proper training. This is what to have on your table before your first paying client.

What goes on your table

For individual lash extensions, you need something from each of these groups.

  • Lashes, in a few lengths and curls
  • Lash glue, and a remover in case a set has to come off
  • Tweezers: one to isolate a natural lash and one to place the extension
  • Lash tape and under-eye patches to keep the lower lashes out of the way
  • A lash cleanser or mousse, a cleaning brush and lint-free wipes
  • A glue ring or holder and mascara wands
  • A mirror to show your client, and a small fan to help the glue dry
  • Individual lashes
  • Lash glues and removers
  • Lash essentials

Starting small, or setting up properly

Two packages cover the two most common starting points. Each package page shows today's price and exactly what is in it.

  • Starter Lashes Package: for a beginner lash technician, around KSh 3,000, with a lash book, glue, tweezer, tape, remover and cleanser
  • Individual Lash Business Package: for a working technician, around KSh 15,000, with a lash set, strong glue and bonder, primer, a glue tank with thermometer, tweezers, patches, a fan and an organiser

Keeping your clients safe

Follow the instructions that come with each product, and get trained before you work on paying clients.

  • Ask about allergies, and do a patch test with a new client or a new glue
  • Work in a room with fresh air, and keep the glue away from the eye
  • Clean your tweezers and tools between clients, and use a fresh wipe and wand for each one
  • Stop and take the set off if a client has irritation, and tell them to see a doctor if it does not settle

Looking after your glue

Lash glue is affected by heat and humidity, and an opened bottle does not last for ever, so check the storage guidance on the bottle and buy what you will use. A glue that behaved well yesterday can behave differently on a wet day, so test it before the client lies down.
